PHS Debate Team Wins Awards
The 30-member Debate Team has had a great start this year. The first debate in October garnered several trophies.  The two varsity teams are sophomores: Jenny L & Seth W, Olivia L & Alexandra M. Team members meet on Weds to develop their debating skills. The next debate is Jan. 12 at Newtown High School.

GES Electric Village

GES Electric Village
The Electric Village is a culmination of the Gainfield Elementary School 4th grade's study of electricity.  The Village was on display for the students' families, the school, and the community. The students design, and decorate a box to look like a candy shop, fire station, or stable, for example. They then assemble two circuits (series and a parallel) into their houses...SEE MORE PICS>>    Inside a Hydrogen Electric Car

Electric Car at PES
Pomperaug Elementary School fourth-graders (at right) were treated to a presentation by PES parent Brad Beauchamp of General Motors. Mr. Beauchamp spoke to four classes of fourth-grade students about exploring alternative methods of energy and the future of non-gasoline-powered automobiles.

Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots at MMS
Several hundred toys were collected by Memorial Middle school students this year and donated to the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program. Pictured are teacher-coordinator Donna Horbachuk and several students who helped with the bagging and loading of toys for transport.

Alert Now
For this school year, we will use our Alert Now in the following fashion:

  • Alert Now will be used to notify staff of delayed openings and no school announcements

  • Alert Now will revert to "emergency mode" to notify parents of weather-related early dismissals

  • Alert Now will be used to notify all staff and parents of emergency situations (Emergency is defined as an unanticipated development that compromises safety and security of students, staff, parents)

Next Year:  In 2008-09, parents will have the option of Alert Now early morning notification for delay opening/no school notification by signing up via Power School's Parent Interactive portal. This feature is not available to us in 2007.

FirstGraders Make G'bread Houses

Gingerbread Houses
Patrick Z. and Ben B. (at left) busily make their gingerbread houses together with the entire LMES first grade class. Nearly 200 children, parents, grandparents, and Long Meadow
Parents Help Decorate Houses Leaders (at right) helped construct gingerbread houses using milk/juice cartons as their base. Note of interest: All the children were instructed not to eat the candies and frosting and they didn't. What good kids!

Pomperaug Pals Ring Kettle

PES Pomperaug Pals
Because there are 50 Pomperaug Pals, they have been divided into 3 groups and they participate in a community service activity at least once a month. So far, they have participated in Kindergarten orientation, new student orientation, Kindergarten-Grade 2 bus buddies, fuel bank fundraising, pumpkin decorating with residents of Kensington Green, sorting canned goods at Food Bank, and ringing Salvation Army kettle.

RMS Ribbit Market
On December 21st, the RMS 7th graders (above) participated in a Ribbit Market. The students set up a variety of stores and sold their wares to other students, staff, and parents...READ MORE>>   SEE PIC GALLERY>>
