letter "P". Students and teacher formed
a circle of fun for one last celebration after
eating their snack of pancakes.

Mapping It Out
Students in Frank
Battaglia's 5th grade class (above) at Pomperaug Elementary
School culminated a unit on atlases in Social Studies with
a physical map project. Each student completed a handmade
map of the United States by modeling elevations with
papier mache-based modeling clay and acrylic paints.

Ribbon Week Celebrated at MMS
Students and staff at Memorial Middle School participated
in the DEA's National Red Ribbon Campaign with a week of
events that raised funds and awareness. The
Middlebury school was decorated with red streamers and
signs with slogans promoting positive choices. Some

Pomperaug Pals
The Pomperaug Pals held a baked goods sale at Southbury
Celebration. The proceeds will be distributed to the
Southbury Fuel Bank. The PALS are a group of fifth graders
who volunteer to help others within their school and
community. The PALS hand over their proceeds to Sandy
Saren, Director of Social Services in Southbury.

Calamari Team Has Unity Breakfast

Calamari Team, led by Ms. Beth Larkins-Strathy, shares a team-building
breakfast with 7th graders and their parents. GES
Composer Program
As part of the school's
ongoing, yearlong studies of composers and their
music, Actor and Musician Dennis Kobray, in full character
and costume, shared the life, times and music of
Johann Sebastian Bach. Mr. Kobray's program,
entitled "Meet the Musicians" was sponsored by

Science
Unit: Plants
Second graders throughout
Region 15 are introduced to the life cycle of plants,
and learn about specific functions carried out by
plants, their basic needs for survival and growth and
the interdependence of plants and animals. Student
findings are based on scientific observations in the
classroom, recording of data, measuring and discussion on written
text. Each of the students in Cathy Tyler's 2nd
grade class at Pomperaug Elementary School (see
above) designed a slide show presentation on the life
cycle of a Brassica plant including germination and growth. PHS
Robotics Team
Pomperaug High School is proud to announce its FIRST
USRobotics team. Every year, thousands of students from
around the world compete in engineering competitions. PHS
has joined the Hartford Regional where the students will
be competing in January 2007. The Panther Project
currently has 28 members and is working hard in pre-season
preparations.

MMS
& RMS Cross Country Championships
Region 15's Memorial and Rochambeau Middle Schools (above)
competed in the 2006 CT State Middle School Cross
Country Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on
November 4th against 44 other schools from around the
state. The Rochambeau Boys A team, consisting of each
schools' top seven runners finished in 2nd place, while
Memorial's Boys A team took 6th. RMS student, Brittany M.,
who won the girls 2.3 mile A race in 14.11 minutes, led
her team to a 3rd place victory, while the MMS Girls A
team finished in 6th place.

Principal Completes the NYC Marathon
Middlebury Elementary principal, Jack Zamary, can run a
school and a world-renowned marathon...and be

PTO Display Wins First Place & Gift Card
The Memorial Middle
School PTO fundraising committee won first place out of 85
schools participating (and a $100 gift card) for their winning
display of the fundraising items at the school this
year. Congratulations!
