Author/Illustrator at
Schools
Matt Tavares, author
and illustrator of such books as Zachary's Ball,
visited Region 15 elementary schools recently. Here,
LMES art enrichment students show their artwork,
inspired by Tavares' books. The PTO sponsors the
Author/Illustrator program.

When Mr. Tavares visited PES, some children (Cloe Z.,
Stella W., Ryan C., and Garrett K.) posed with his
books. (Picture on right.)

GES: Pumpkin Mania
Pumpkin Mania has been a tradition at
GES for over 10 years. Fourth graders brainstorm and
prepare props weeks before "The Day" in order to create
their Pumpkin-Creations. They are inspired by their
favorite story-book, mythological, and seasonal
characters, or by people whom we call: "history-shakers,
policy-makers and ground-breakers". These people are the
icons of our International, Historic, and Popular
Cultures. On "The Morning Of Mania" we gather to
complete the humanistic transformation of simple
pumpkins with art materials and the priceless help of
parent volunteers....SEE

GES: 5th Grade
Actresses
Five
fifth-graders from Mr. McGee's class at GES selected,
read, and performed a play for the school's
afternoon Kindergarteners. Alyssa V., Julia P., Casey
G., Megan C., and Madeline T. chose "Class Clown" by
Robert Mauro because "the play teaches a good lesson",
said Casey. Stay tuned for a future production, entitled
"Hannah's Nightmare". The actresses think they will
perform it for the older GES students because it may be
more appropriate for fourth and fifth grade audiences.

PHS: Tour of

Newly-Elected
Board of Ed Members
Many interested citizens
turned out for the PTO Advisory Council-sponsored "Meet
the Candidates" forum. On Nov. 6th, Southbury
voters elected Eileen Strange, Sharon Guck, &
incumbent Sharon Elias. Joseph Drauss and David Erwin
were re-elected in Middlebury.

LMES: Pumpkin
Globes
Fifth-graders used globes as reference material to plot
the equator, continents, and oceans on their
pumpkin-globes. Working in teams of 4 or 5, the students
also designed a compass rose on the pumpkins. This was a
culminating activity in Map Skills. With this
foundation, they'll next be working on the regions of
the United States.
PHS's Media Center
Website
Each month during
the school year, CT Educational Media Assn. features a
website created by one of Connecticut's school library
media centers. This is not a competition, but rather an
opportunity to see the different ways that media
specialists have utilized the Internet. In November, the
website of
Liza Zandonella, media specialist at
Pomperaug High School, has been chosen by CEMA.
CEMA provides leadership, professional development,
publicity, networking and support to the CT school
library community. Also, CEMA promotes collaboration
between classroom teachers, library media specialists,
administrators, and curriculum specialists for the
benefit of student achievement especially in information
literacy and technology literacy.

MES: Chinese
Educator Visits MES Classrooms
Ms. Wang Luyu,
vice-principal at the Taishan Foreign Language
School, Shandong Province, China, visited Middlebury
Elementary School to learn more about what an American
classroom is like. The vice-principal, who also serves
as the school's English teacher, toured MES with
principal Jack Zamary and told him about her school.
Principal Jack Zamary showed the vice principal a variety of classrooms,
as well as the technology room. "She was particularly
interested in talking about the guided reading program
and how different reading groups read different texts,"
said Mr. Zamary.

GES: Veterans Day
Veterans Pete
D'Amato, Harmon Andrews, and Stan Prybylski visited GES
to talk with 4th and 5th grade students about the
significance of Veteran's Day. Principal Len Tomasello
showed the gentlemen a project that the schoolchildren
created in preparation for the event. Each student was
asked to interview their families to see if they had
relatives who served in any wars. Some students even
found relatives in their family trees who served in the
Civil War.
