MMS: Mr. Science's "Microchemistry Class"
Mr. Science of the CT Children's Museum spoke to some sixth-graders about microchemistry. The students experimented with combining droplets of unidentified liquids to cause a chemical reaction.

LMES: 4th Graders Make Thanksgiving Day Baskets

Long Meadow Elementary School 4th graders provided all the fixin's for a Thanksgiving Day feast for local families, including a turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, and butter. The students decorated a banner, wishing the family a happy Thanksgiving...SEE PICS>>

 

MES: Scrabble
SCRABBLE is a triple word score at Middlebury Elementary School, where 5th grade teachers use the popular board game to challenge their students spelling skills, thinking skills and while adding up their word scores, math skills too.  According to the National Scrabble Association, nearly 20,000 schools across the country have some type of Scrabble program. 

 

GES: Kindness in School/Home/Community
Gainfield Elementary School 5th grade students participated in "World Kindness Week", by spreading random acts of kindness at school, home and throughout their community.  Under the supervision of their guidance counselor, Laura Boccialetti (above, far left), kindness joined the 5th grade class together with a paper chain of links that symbolized a random act of kindness performed by each student. 

 

LMES/PHS: Bonjour--An Introduction to French
Members of the Pomperaug High School French Honor Society visited Mrs. Joan Kelly's 5th graders at LMES to introduce them to the French language through games and songs....

    GES: Second Graders Study Church's Art with Unique Writing Piece
The Gainfield Elementary School second graders studied the above painting, "Mt. Ktaadn, 1853" by Frederic Edwin Church. The students focused their ideas (one of the The Six Traits of Writing) in a writing piece whereby they imagined themselves as the person in the painting. They also were inspired by Church's work in incorporating the five senses.

PES: Kindergarten Visit to Gingerbread Village
Pomperaug Elementary School Kindergarten classes visited The
Gingerbread Village held at St. Georges Church in Middlebury. The students each received a decorated gingerbread cookie and then toured the village which consisted of various houses, historic buildings, toy boxes, farms, and animals all made from gingerbread and candies. Pictured are students from Mrs. Rosa's morning Kindergarten class.

 

  Estimation 
The MES Friendly Helpers at MES held a fundraiser for families in financial need.  MES students could guess the number of M&M's in a jar for $1.00.  With 1,364 M&M's in the jar, the winner guessing 1,370 was Katie S. in Mrs. Minutillo's 5th grade class. Third Grader Carey C. took 2nd place while Mrs. Benson's AM Kindergarten tied for 3rd place with Julia D., also in Mrs. Benson's class. Guessing the number of M&M's in the jar correlates with the Mail Trailblazers Program in teaching estimation for grades K-5. 

 

GES: Trying To Break a World Record for Reading
Gainfield students gathered with students from around the world to break a record for the most people reading the same thing simultaneously. The children read a passage from "Charlotte's Web"....

The Pomperaug Pals from Pomperaug Elementary School spent time sorting food at the Southbury Food Center.

 

 

LMES & MES: Helping Those Less Fortunate
Long Meadow Elementary School 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have been busy little elves. In the past few weeks, they have been working in the art room, making clay pockets to sell as a fundraiser to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen in Waterbury. (See bottom, left). During the weeks of December 18-21 and January 2-5, LMES students are selling their hand-made clay pockets for $2 and $3 apiece....

   Likewise, Middlebury Elementary School early morning art students made cookie cutter animals (see bottom, right) to raise nearly $300 to buy animals for poor families world wide....

GES: Electric Village
The Electric Village is a culmination of the GES 4th grade's study of electricity. The students design and color a box, then assemble two circuits (series and a parallel) into their houses. The Village was on display for the students' families, the school, and the community....SEE PICS>>

Short Stories: New Works by Florin I. Firimita
PHS art teacher, Florin Firimita, will have his artwork on display on January 27th-April 14th at the Marie Louise Trichet Gallery in Litchfield, CT. The opening reception is Jan. 27 from 1-3pm.

Keeping Youth Safe in CyberSpace: A Presentation for Region 15 Parents
Thursday, Feb. 1    7:00pm - 9:00pm     At Pomperaug High School 
(Sponsored by the Southbury-Middlebury Youth & Family Services and PHS)
   This presentation will be a hands-on practical training for parents.
Learn the facts about what is going on with adolescents and the world wide web and learn tools and strategies that teach young people how to avoid falling victim to predators, bullies and inappropriate content while
allowing them to experience the benefits of technology.
