Alert Now
For this school year, we will use our Alert
Now in the following fashion:

Alert Now will be used
to notify staff of delayed openings and no
school announcements
-
Alert Now will revert to
"emergency mode" to notify parents of
weather-related early dismissals
-
Alert Now will be used
to notify all staff and parents of emergency
situations (Emergency is defined as an unanticipated
development that compromises safety and security of
students, staff, parents)
Next Year: In
2008-09, parents will have the option of Alert Now early
morning notification for delay opening/no school
notification by signing up via Power School's Parent
Interactive portal. This feature is not available to us
in 2007.

PHS Ping Pong Club
A new, after school club was
formed by Pomperaug High School sophomores, Brenden L.
and Zach S. entitled "The Ping Pong Club". Nearly two
dozen students, under the supervision of PHS teachers
Mrs. Kathleen Shannon and Mr. Rich Prevost, play ping
pong on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Memorial Middle
School teacher Mr. Mike Trusiewicz, an accomplished ping
pong player himself, teaches the students championship
techniques on Mondays. "This is a great place for the
students to come after school, particularly if they
don't participate in a winter sport," said Mrs. Shannon.
The club is open to all PHS students.

The White Memorial Middle School
Mindstorm Mustangs qualified for the State competition
at CCSU. The competition included 14 tasks that the robot was programmed
to perform, an interview with the TEAMWORK Judge, an
inspection by the Robot judge, and a presentation to a
panel of judges (the subject was improving energy
efficiency in your community). The presentation piggy-backed the theme of the robotics event which was energy
conservation, usage and alternative energy choices. The
students did a great job representing
their school and community!

The Hungry Panther
Pomperaug High School
students, under the supervision of Family and Consumer
Science teacher Belle Garafola, has recently opened "The
Hungry Panther" cafe. The after school cafe is open from
Tuesday - Thursday and features healthy snacks for
students to purchase.
"The students are so excited about the cafe. It is
wonderful to see the enthusiasm and genuine gratitude
for a program that they love. The students will be
selling cafe coupons as stocking stuffers. Parents
should love this idea. We are so appreciative to the PHS
PTO who made the Cafe possible with their generous
grant," said Mrs. Garafola.
Students from the Marketing and Accounting classes have
helped with the cafe for its publicity and money
management.

Angels of Hope
Long Meadow
Elementary School third-graders Andre T. and Samantha D.
glaze the clay angels that they will be sending to the
children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The
Long Meadow students are shaping and glazing angels as
part of their school's annual community service
project.

Also at LMES, first graders
are donating mittens and gloves to the needy in lieu of
gifts to their teachers as part of "Gloves of Love."

GES Winter Fair
The students at
Gainfield Elementary School shopped for gifts for
their family at the annual Winter Fair. Co-Chairs
Karen Fimmano and Joan Gaffney said that the tables were
sorted by recipient (grandmother, brother, etc.) and
parent-helpers assisted the shoppers if necessary. Each
child also was allowed to have one present gift-wrapped
(usually Mom's).

Crystal Snowflakes
LMES fifth-graders Peter C. and Andrew S. dip their
pipecleaner snowflakes into a jar filled with hot water
and borax. Come Monday, their "snowflakes" will grow
crystals, in this fun science experiment in Mrs.
Poulin's class.

Global
Literacy
Mrs. Beth Wagner, 4th
grade teacher at Middlebury Elementary School and
president of the Northwest Region of CT Reading Assn.
coordinated a presentation about "Global Literacy" for
local teachers. The presentation by Dr. Bill Farr of
UConn (at left) was prefaced by an exhibition of
Middle Eastern dancing. Dr. Farr encouraged teachers to
think globally about literacy while making efforts on
a local, school-based scale.
