Educational Leaders Visit Region 15
Region 15 was
honored to host three Chinese educators in January 2008. The
dignitaries
toured PES, MMS, and PHS in order to learn about our
school system and to further develop our
sister-school partnership. At the farewell reception
honoring the teachers and principal, Dr. Sippy and Mr. Chen
signed an agreement to begin a new phase in the

PES Students Learn
about Mexico
Second graders
rotated among four classrooms to learn about the food,
culture, and songs of Mexico. Nicholas H. (at right)
is busy weaving a Mexican God's Eye. The Mexican Fiesta
was the culmination of the social studies unit on
Mexico.

Family members read stories to the students at the
popular PJ StoryHour at LMES. This year's theme was

PES Encouraging
Reading Dahl
The
fourth-graders in Mrs. Matthews' class at PES are
studying the works of Roald Dahl, and went
classroom-to-classroom encouraging their schoolmates to
read Dahl's books, including Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach. The
students dressed up as their favorite characters,
including (at left) Peyton F. as a peach.

Studying
Countries
Ali M. and her PES classmates had a month to research a
country, and presented the information to their class
and family. They talked about the country's customs,
foods, celebrations, and clothing. The students also
brought in a food that is popular in the country they
chose.

RMS Sculptures
The students at
Rochambeau Middle School created life-size sculptures
of Shakespeare, DaVinci, Picasso, and even Elvis Presley,
using paint and recycled items...READ

LMES Fifth Graders
Visit Nature Center
To enrich their
reading experience after finishing Hatchet, the
Long Meadow Elementary School 5th graders learned how to
build a fire and a lean-to, keep from getting frostbite,
and how to use a compass at a visit to Roaring Brook
Nature Center....SEE

PHS Administration
Changes
Dr. John "Jay" Smith
(at left) was hired as the Interim Principal at
Pomperaug High School to fill the position vacated by
Mr. James Agostine who left PHS to become the School
Superintendent in Region 16. Mr. Leon Banas has been
appointed the Interim Assistant Principal, as Ms.
Kristen Della Volpe is the new Principal at Litchfield
High School.

Heart
Nearly 75 LMES fifth-graders jumped rope and raised
$6700 for the American Heart Association...SEE

The students and
staff at Middlebury Elementary School conducted a mitten
and glove drive to help students at Wilson Elementary
School in Waterbury, CT.
