PES Pomperaug Pals
The Pomperaug Pals are a
group of fifth graders at PES who volunteer their time
and hard work within the school and community. On May
2nd, the Pals visited Kensington Green to assist the residents
with their recreational activities; some students
played their favorite tunes on their band instruments.
The Pals have done many service activities this year
including: participating in Kindergarten and New Family
orientation; assisting K-2 students as bus
buddies; raising funds for the Southbury Fuel Bank, and
the Salvation Army; and organizing canned goods for the
Southbury Food Bank.

Associations Collecting Beanie Babies
Memorial Guidance
Assn and Pomperaug Guidance Assn are collecting Beanie
Babies so US soldiers can give them to Iraqi and Afghani
children as a show of goodwill. Please donate new and
secondhand Beanie Babies in the MMS school lobby and
PHS Guidance Dept. by May 25th.

Pentino Named Swim
Coach of the Year
The CT High School Swim
Coaches Assn. named Boys' Swim/Diving Coach Fran
Pentino, a coach of 14 years at PHS, as Swim Coach
of the Year (see picture at right). Coach Pentino's
teams have won a total of 6 State Championships over the
years.

District 4th
Graders Learn About Immigration
Gainfield
Elementary School students studied immigrants at the GES
Immigration Festival last month. As part of the language
arts and social studies curricula, the Region 15
4th-graders have been studying immigration to the
U.S. from 1870-1914. The children also assumed
an immigrant's name and persona to write an immigration
diary chronicling their journey to America.
ITLA Expo
The CT H.S. Innovation Expo was held on May 12th at the CT Convention Ctr
in Hartford. PHS's innovation this year
is called HOMES--it is a dynamic, web-based interface to
every electrical device in your house and displays the energy
used by each device. It allows the user to turn devices on, off,
up or down in order to minimize energy waste and maximize
consumer savings. The PHS students won Outstanding Exhibit
Booth.

Students' Artistic Reflections
In Fall 2006, 100 6th & 7th RMS graders created artwork
based on feelings about security, safety, and

MMS Language
Students Celebrate World Languages Week
Eight students at
Memorial Middle School taught their native language to
fellow students, and a group of students did a play in
Spanish for 6th graders. Also during World Languages Week, the
students participated in a poster contest. Mrs. Mary
Galiette studied Vincent Van Gogh and had some food
decorated in a Van Gogh theme.

Dr. Lanning & Dr.
Bosman Report on Trip to China
Asst. Superintendent, Dr. Lois Lanning and Director of
World Languages, Dr. Yolande Bosman
visited China in April as part of a Connecticut
delegation of educators to establish sister-school

Colonial Times
A "Chat with the
Colonists" was presented by Mrs. Wengler's 3rd grade
class at Middlebury Elementary School. Each student
chose a colonial occupation, constructed a model and
dressed in character to show and tell about their
occupation during colonial times.

PHS Robotics Team
The
2006-07 PHS Panther Project Robotics team members (at
right) received their participation medals at the
Friends of Region 15 FIRST Organizations wrap-up event.

Schools Hold
Mother's Day Flower Sales
As part of their annual fundraisers, many of the Region
15 schools held their annual Mother's Day Plant Sale.
Students clutched money to be exchanged for petunias,
pansies, and perennials. Oh my!
RMS: School Walk
for Diabetes
On April 4th,
Rochambeau Middle School held its first School Walk for
Diabetes. RMS raised over $8400.00 for the American
Diabetes Assn to help fund diabetes research for
those with Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes. RMS will
receive $1200 from the American Diabetes Assn to
purchase new Physical Education equipment.
