PES Helicopter Visit
A U.S. Army helicopter and
crew visited the students at Pomperaug Elementary School
on May 31st. Massachusetts Army National
Guardsman Chief Warrant Officer Chris Monteiro flew the
OH-58 helicopter to PES to show the students what the
inside of a helicopter looks like. He also told the
children that boys and girls can be anything they want
to be when they grow up, but need to stay away from
drugs and alcohol, listen to their parents and teachers,
study hard, and stay in school. PES parent, Mrs. Jen Holguin, coordinated the visit.

children submitted drawings of sterling silver jewelry
with semi-precious stones.
Region 15 winners were: Melissa C., Nikolas K., Nick P.,
and Olivia H. of Middlebury Elementary School; Benjamin
C., John S., Alexandra T., and Kristopher W. of Long
Meadow Elementary School; Caitlin C., Emma R., Aleena

"We've sponsored this contest for many years," said

5th-grade classes from across the state participated and it gets bigger every year. I'm glad
the students enjoy it."

MMS Spanish Cooking
With the assistance from parent-helpers(at left), students from Mrs. Judith Cruz's
7th grade Spanish
class at Memorial Middle School learned
how to cook Tortillas Espanolas as part of a lesson
about Spanish and Mexican foods. "This is an entirely
different dish than Mexican tortillas," said Mrs. Cruz.
"Oftentimes, people think of a tortilla as a flat bread.
The Tortilla Espanola is an omelette that contains
potatoes, eggs, and onions, and is commonly made in
Spain."

on dictionary use. Middlebury Elementary School
