PES Helicopter Visit
A U.S. Army helicopter and crew visited the students at Pomperaug Elementary School on May 31st. Massachusetts Army National Guardsman Chief Warrant Officer Chris Monteiro flew the OH-58 helicopter to PES to show the students what the inside of a helicopter looks like. He also told the children that boys and girls can be anything they want to be when they grow up, but need to stay away from drugs and alcohol, listen to their parents and teachers, study hard, and stay in school. PES parent, Mrs. Jen Holguin, coordinated the visit.

Michaels Jewelers Art Drawing Contest
Seventeen mothers in the Region 15 school district woke up on Mother's Day to lovingly wrapped presents of jewelry, hand-designed by their children. Michaels Jewelers sponsored their annual Mother's Day Art Drawing Contest for fifth-grade art students; over 725 CT children submitted drawings of sterling silver jewelry with semi-precious stones.

Region 15 winners were: Melissa C., Nikolas K., Nick P., and Olivia H. of Middlebury Elementary School; Benjamin C., John S., Alexandra T., and Kristopher W. of Long Meadow Elementary School; Caitlin C., Emma R., Aleena O., and Claire M. of Gainfield Elementary School; and Justin M., Eftihios M., Hannah H., Meghan C., and Amber D. of Pomperaug Elementary School.

"We've sponsored this contest for many years," said Jonathan Michaels of Michaels Jewelers. "This year 50 5th-grade classes from across the state participated and it gets bigger every year. I'm glad the students enjoy it."

RMS Raise $1250 for Perpetual Fund
The RMS Student Council raised and donated $1250 for the Region 15 PTO Perpetual Fund, from proceeds from their Spring Dance. Through fundraising efforts and the generosity of community giving, the Region 15 PTO Perpetual Fund is able to help Southbury and Middlebury families who have a child in a Region 15 school and experience significant financial expenditures due to their child's life threatening and/or life-altering medical condition. To apply to the Region 15 PTO Perpetual Fund for assistance, contact your school's nurse or guidance counselor, your school's Perpetual Fund Representative for additional information.

MMS Spanish Cooking
With the assistance from parent-helpers(at left), students from Mrs. Judith Cruz's 7th grade Spanish class at Memorial Middle School learned how to cook Tortillas Espanolas as part of a lesson about Spanish and Mexican foods. "This is an entirely different dish than Mexican tortillas," said Mrs. Cruz. "Oftentimes, people think of a tortilla as a flat bread. The Tortilla Espanola is an omelette that contains potatoes, eggs, and onions, and is commonly made in Spain."

MMS Student Wins French Award
At the Annual Meeting of the Alliance Francaise of Northwestern CT., Inc., Memorial Middle School student Rachael B. was honored for her writing sample submitted to the locally-sponsored beginning category of the Concours National de Français 2007.  The ceremony took place at the Southbury Public Library on  May 19. Rachael and several winners in the intermediate and advanced levels attended a breakfast reception and were awarded prizes for their entries.

RMS Leis Support Sports
Students sold leis to support the school's baseball & softball teams. Kelsey B. and Melanie S., both 14, gives Mr. Steve Vastola his bag of leis to sell to his students.

Free Dictionaries
Region 15 teachers and students agree on one word to describe the free dictionaries distributed by the Tribury Rotary Club: "Awesome!" The Tribury Rotary is donating a dictionary to every third grade student in Region 15 schools in preparation for fourth-grade when students rely heavily on dictionary use. Middlebury Elementary School students, Avery A., Olivia D., Tess G., and Madeleine D. are flanked by principal, Jack Zamary and Tribury Rotarian Juan Rodriguez-Torrent. The Rotary Dictionary Project is part of a literacy program, with the goal of getting a dictionary into every hand of a third-grader.

PHS Wins Kudos at 4th Annual Halo Awards
The 4th Annual Halo Awards, presented by Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, are given to area schools for their work in theatre and musical theatre. This year, PHS was awarded 19 nominations in competition with 20 other high schools in the area. PHS won for Best Dancing in "Anything Goes" (special thanks to PHS history teacher Nicole Antosh for her choreography); senior Adrienne C. won for Best Supporting Actress in a play for her dynamic interpretation of Ariel in "The Tempest"; and "The Tempest" also won top honors for best play of the year!

LMES Field Day
An annual tradition, students from Long Meadow Elementary School participated in Field Day, a full-day devoted to teamwork, exercise, and fun.
