AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR MELISSA SWEET PRESENTS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS School Parent-Teacher Organizations Sponsor Author/Illustrator Programs During the week of April 21-24, 2008, author/illustrator Melissa Sweet will be presenting a PTO-sponsored author program at each of the four elementary schools. Melissa Sweet has illustrated over 70 children's books from board books to nonfiction jackets. Her collages and paintings have appeared in many publications including the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, on greeting cards, cookbooks and posters. Her toys have won the Oppenheim and Parents Choice Awards. The first books she wrote and illustrated Carmine: A Little More Red (Houghton Mifflin) was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Books, 2005. Other titles include The Boy Who Drew Birds by Jacqueline Davies (Houghton Mifflin) and Baby Bear's Books by Jane Yolen (Harcourt). Tupelo Rides the Rails, a book she also wrote and illustrated, is her most recent work and was just published (Houghton Mifflin). Ms. Sweet was born in 1956 in Wycoff, New Jersey. She attended Endicott College and Kansas City Art Institute and began illustrating books in 1986. “We, in Region 15, have a special connection to her book, The Boy Who Drew Birds: the Story of John James Audubon. The Audubon Center at Bent of the River, a nature center and sanctuary, is located in Southbury on East Flat Hill Road,” said Pomperaug Elementary School media specialist Pat Smith.
