3. INFORMATION:

A. PHS Grade 9 Social Studies Proposed Text for World History: Nancy Carney, PHS Social Studies Department Chair, and Pat Nolan, 9th grade Social Studies teacher, reviewed their proposal for a replacement text for 9th grade World History. This text would replace our current book that has outdated content. The recommended text is also better aligned with the new Social Studies curriculum and provides many support resources. This recommended text will be presented to the Board of Education at tonight’s meeting as a first presentation.

B. Curriculum Update: Dr. Lanning shared highlights of trends and issues in World Language instruction that were recently presented to the Foreign Language teachers by Christy Brown from Glastonbury. Glastonbury has a national reputation for their outstanding language programs. Some of the points made included:

·1 The way of the world has now become multilingual – bilingual is not enough anymore if we are to truly communicate and understand others. We need to dispel the thinking of some Americans that to speak anything other than English is unnecessary!

·2 Studies have found that by comparing the grammar of another language to your own helps you better understand and become more proficient in your first language.

·3 Glastonbury and other districts believe it far better to require Foreign Language at the elementary and middle schools for all students before offering elective classes at the high school level. Early instruction will ensure all students gain some proficiency with a second language and it will result in a much stronger high school program.

The Region 15 World Language leadership team is exploring some of these ideas and others as program revisions continue.
