3. INFORMATION:

A. Region 15’s Elementary Math Instructional Coach: Dr. Lanning provided Personnel Policies Curriculum Committee members with an update on the Elementary Math Instructional Coach. This is a new position, currently funded by a grant. The purpose of an Elementary Math Instructional Coach is to support teachers in implementing research-based classroom instructional practices that will help all students be successful in mathematics. Recently, teachers were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the position. The survey results were shared and were overwhelmingly positive.

B. Update on Fine Arts Department: Mrs. Jane Sarjeant, Director of Fine Arts reviewed Music and Art curricula and discussed changes that are occurring in these areas. The biggest shift has been to move beyond skills and knowledge to include conceptual understanding of the principles of art and music. The tasks students complete emphasize creative and critical thinking and also integrate technology. Mrs. Sarjeant shared her efforts to recruit Pomperaug High School alumni to present their artwork at this year’s Art Show on April 25 and 26, 2008. Personnel Policies/Curriculum Committee members were very excited about the district Fine Arts Program.
