3. INFORMATION:

A. Dr. Lanning provided updates on summer curriculum writing:

· Development of social studies curriculum units for Grades Kindergarten through high school. Over 40 teachers, from each school and grade level, worked in teams to write these units. Social Studies Instructional Teacher Leaders, Dr. Lanning and Dr. Lynn Erickson (nationally/recognized concept-based curriculum facilitator) trained teachers and guided this effort. Teacher leaders will be presenting examples of the new curriculum to the Board of Education later this year.

· The first phase of language arts was the second major curriculum project this summer. It was launched by Dr. Lanning and district Language Arts Instructional Teacher Leaders. Again, approximately 40 teachers kindergarten through high school drafted a language arts unit that will continue to be refined by the language arts curriculum team throughout this year. Language Arts curriculum work is complex and has many different facets. The goal is to naturally integrate as many of the skills and processes as possible and to increase students’ reading and writing.

INFORMATION

· Math and science curriculum revision work were successfully completed. Additionally, special and regular education teachers worked together to develop sample differentiated lessons for students who need more support or who need extensions beyond the core curriculum. These ideas were incorporated directly into our district math and science curriculum documents.

· Other curriculum projects that were smaller in scope include: Economics, Physical Education curriculum revisions, Health and Art.
