Caring for Our Children: Safety, Security and Community

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Community Members,

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  Again we are left stunned and saddened by these horrific events and we all are understandably outraged when innocent children are made victims of senseless violence.  While we share in the grief for the victims and their community, our thoughts also focus on our own children and their safety in our schools.

I want to reassure you that school safety is something Region 15 reflects on regularly -- not just when a tragic event such as this brings the issue to the forefront.  Our commitment to provide a safe environment for our students and staff remains a daily priority.

Each of our schools have in place rigorous building entry procedures, police and security patrols, surveillance systems, and other procedures that, by design and intent, are not for public disclosure.

These procedures have been in place for some time, and protocols are reviewed periodically and refined where appropriate.  Our ongoing partnership with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies is a vital component of our safety plan.

Communicating about an organization’s security preparedness requires balancing the public’s desire to know with the imperative need to maintain the integrity of the security plan. We take great care in the safety precautions that are in place throughout our district.

We do recognize, however, that even with safety procedures in place security issues can still arise.  Therefore, we ask that anyone in our school community – students and adults – report any concerns to a Region 15 administrator or other appropriate person. We recognize that it is impossible to predict all possible scenarios, but having a network of supportive and attentive relationships among adults and students is an essential component of keeping our students safe.

Additionally, there are staff members at each school available to individually assist students who may experience anxiety, fear or uncertainty due to recent tragic events, and we encourage students and parents to access this support if needed.

We take the safety of your children very seriously, and Region 15 will continue to be proactive to ensure our buildings remain safe and secure.  In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting and the numerous horrific events that preceded it, we must work together to support our hopes for children’s safety and security with corresponding action today.  No one – not students, not parents, not staff members -- should ever have to fear the safety of children at school.  Therefore, it is time to add our voices to those who are calling on our legislators to act swiftly and responsibly in favor of mental health services and gun control.

Everyone has an important role in maintaining a safe school environment. I thank you for your continued support of our schools. All of us at Region 15 sincerely appreciate your efforts as we continually work to protect your children—our students.
