Art Curriculum Philosophy

A visual arts education is fundamental to human development, realizing the potential and power of the creative and imaginative mind. Since the beginning of time, the essence of every culture has been articulated through its arts. The arts are central in understanding and interpreting the past, defining the present, and shaping the future. As active participants in visual arts, students creatively shape and express life experiences.

Visual language is essential for communicating in our multifaceted world. New technology utilizes visual imagery as an integral and essential means for communication and expression, and requires a work force that can create and understand multimedia resources through an artistic eye. Through the arts, students develop complex problem solving and higher order thinking skills, self-esteem and self-discipline.

Art is the objectification of feeling1.  Art education provides students with the means to express that which is inexpressible by words alone.  Whether life imitates art or art imitates life, art cultivates deep and meaningful understandings about life and the human condition. Every student is entitled to a basic education that includes a comprehensive, standards-based art education.
