Grades 9 - 12 Course Offerings:  Science

Biology - Core
A review of and focus on core topics in biology including: plant and animal phyla, human biology, cytology, ecology, botany and genetics. General Biology is a laboratory science.

Biology - Academic
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Physical Science.
This college-bound course is designed to explore in-depth principles of biology in areas such as biochemistry, cytology, zoology, and human anatomy. Biology is a laboratory science.

Biology - Honors
Prerequisite: Final grade of A-, A or A+ in Algebra (middle school), or grade of A or better in Physical Science (high school).
Corequisite: Honors Geometry

A course offered to college-bound students designed to explore in-depth principles of biology in areas such as biochemistry, cytology, zoology, and human anatomy. Biology is a laboratory science.

Biology - Advanced Placement
Prerequisite: Successful completion of one year of Biology, one year of Chemistry, and teacher recommendation.
The course's topics include cellular and molecular biology, enzymes, energy transformations, photosynthesis, respiration, ecological, evolutionary and ethological biology. Biology is a laboratory science. A summer reading assignment is a required part of this course.

Human Biology - Honors
Prerequisite: Successful completion of one year of Biology. One year of Chemistry is highly recommended.
The areas of study include: organization of the human body, biochemistry, cytology, histology, systems of the body, and genetics. The interrelationship of the body's systems is stressed. Human Biology is a laboratory science.

Chemistry
This course covers topics as atomic and molecular structure, the periodic table, formula-writing, and chemical equation-writing, physical and chemical changes, mass and volume relationships, acids and bases, solutions, and gases. Chemistry is a laboratory science.

Chemistry - Honors
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of B or better in Algebra I.
Corequisite: Algebra II or permission of the instructor

This high honors sequence course covers topics such as atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, properties and changes in matter, the mole and molar relationships in chemical reactions, the characteristics of solids, liquids and gases, solution chemistry, acids and bases, reaction rates equilibrium, organic chemistry and nuclear chemistry. Chemistry is a laboratory science.

Chemistry - Advanced Placement
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of B or better in first year of Chemistry.
Corequisite: Precalculus and permission of the instructor.
This course's topics include atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, states of matter, chemical reactions, acids and bases, solution chemistry, organic, nuclear, kinetics and thermodynamics. Students who enroll in this course are expected to take the AP exam. Chemistry is a laboratory science. A summer assignment is a required part of this course.

Earth Science I
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Physical Geology-Mineralogy: This section deals with weathering, erosion, glaciation, crustal movements, and vulcanism and how they have sculptured our state and planet.

Earth Science II
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Astronomy: This section deals with stellar classifications and evolution, characteristics of the planets, Einstein's theories of relativity, and other cosmic phenomena.
Meteorology: This section deals with environmental concerns such as ozone, greenhouse effect, acid raid, El Nino and more. Local and global weather patterns and the factors that create them are also studied to facilitate development of student weather forecasts.

Forensic Science
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of core requirements in science.
The course involves the application of scientific principles to the investigation of crime, including the study of fingerprints, pigments, hair fibers, and arson.

Marine Science & Oceanography
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Prer
equisite: Successful completion of core requirements in science.
Students learn topics such as physical oceanography, geology and topography of the basin and coast, water chemistry, circulation and climate.

Physical Science - Core
This is a course that surveys the major topics of Chemistry and Physics and is structured to accommodate those students who have experienced difficulty with math and science.

Physical Science
Corequisite: Algebra I or Algebra 1, Sequence 1
This course explores core topics in Chemistry and Physics. It is designed to give academic students exposure and experience i the physical sciences, including measurement, atomic theory, the periodic table, bonding, acids, bases, salts, kinematics, dynamics, work and energy, electricity, magnetism, and light.

Physics
Prerequisite: Algebra II
Physics is an exploration of the nature of matter and energy. The topics include potential and kinetic energy, measurement, problem-solving, velocity, acceleration, Newton's Laws of Motion, two dimensional and periodic motion, waves, sound, light and electricity. Physics is a laboratory science.

Physics  - Honors
Prerequisite: Grade of B or better in Algebra II and Chemistry.
Corequisite: Precalculus
This honors course introduces the investigative and analytical methods of science, with emphasis on mathematical methods. The topics developed are mathematical descriptions of motion, Newton's Laws of Motion and gravitation, the conservation laws of momentum and energy, thermodynamics and molecular motion, electric and magnetic fields, electric circuit analysis and the production of electromagnetic waves and atomic structure. Physics is a laboratory science.

Physics - Advanced Placement
Prerequisite: 1 Year of Physics
Corequisite: Calculus and permission of the AP teacher
The classical aspects of mechanics, electricity and magnetism. Half of this course is devoted to the development of kinematics and dynamics of translation and rotation; Newtonian dynamics, conservation laws of work, energy, power and momentum. The second half of the course is devoted to the study of electrostatics, potential difference, electric current in DC circuits, capacitors and capacitive circuits, magnetism, production of magnetic fields and electromagnetic induction. Physics is a laboratory science.

Environmental Science I
Fall semester only; 1/2 year, 1/2 credit
Students will study the fundamental ecological dynamics of communities, populations and ecosystems. Particular topics include biospheres, abiotic factors, the oxygen cycle, plant diversity, interactions of ecosystems, biomes, human populations and population growth.

Environmental Science II
Spring semester only; 1/2 year, 1/2 credit
Students will study the adaptations and responses of plants and animals to environmental stimuli. Particular topics include the study of organic fuel sources, nuclear energy, solar energy, alternative energy sources, pollution impact on the environment and people.

Science, Technology and Society I-Core
1/2 year, 1/2 credit
Students must have taken the science portion of the CAPT test and scored at the "Basic: level-2" or "Below basic: level-1"
The goal of this course is to increase students' understanding of the natural world around them and help them make informed decisions about issues in society. Content is drawn from Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science.

Science, Technology and Society II (STS)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of 2 high school science courses. 1/2 credit, 1 semester
Ecological and environmental issues are a constant theme. The role of consumer citizens in our technological world is examined closely. Major topics include electricity, hydroponics and rocketry.
