Grades 9 - 12 Course
Offerings: Social Studies
World History I
The course will build on the concepts and skills learned in the
middle schools and listed as the K-12 Social Studies Program's
main ideas. Students will study the evolution of western
civilization through the French Revolution.
World History II
Prerequisite: Successful
completion of World History I or Permission from the Dept. Chair
The course will continue the concepts taught in World History I.
The evolution of western civilization and selected non-western
cultures will continue from the French Revolution until present
day. Understanding and respecting the many cultures in the world
today will be the main emphasis of this course.
Participatory Civics
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Required by the State of Connecticut, this course will discuss
the current issues in national and local governments, review the
basic framework of American government, and allow opportunity
for hands-on activities which will prepare students for active
participation in their roles as citizens.
United States History
Prerequisite: Successful
completion of World History I and II or Permission from the
Dept. Chair
Students will study the U.S. from our colonial beginnings to the
present. Economic, geographic, political and social factors in
our history will be covered.
United States History -
Advanced Placement
Prerequisite:
Recommendation by current social studies teacher
The course content will be similar as that in U.S. History but
with more emphasis on analysis, expository writing, and primary
source readings. Students will be required to complete such
activities at a college pace.
ELECTIVES
European History - AP
Prerequisite:
Recommendation by AP Instructor
The content of this
course will be similar to a portion of the World History II
curriculum but with more emphasis on analysis, literature, the
arts, and expository writing. Students will be required to
complete such activities at a college pace.
Introduction to Psychology
I
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor and recommendation of
current social studies' teacher if not a senior.
This course introduces
some of the major principles and concepts of psychology as
applicable to today's society, including states of
consciousness, personality development, adolescent psychology,
abnormal psychology, theories of counseling and careers in
psychology.
Psychology II
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Psychology I or
permission of the instructor, and junior or senior status.
This course continues to
introduce some of the major principles and concepts of
psychology as applicable to today's society, including
personality theory, emotions, motivation, psychological testing,
learning, social, cognitive and trait theories, health and
psychology and treatment/therapy for psychological problems.
Psychology - AP
Prerequisite: Recommendation by the current social studies' teacher.
Previous AP experience is suggested.
While similar in content
to Psychology I and II, this course includes additional work to
prepare students for the AP exam. Students with AP United States history experience will be given
priority.
Government - AP
Prerequisite: Recommendation by current social studies' teacher.
Previous AP experience is suggested.
While similar in content
to the 1/2 year Civics course, this course will prepare students
for the two AP Government exams: U.S. government and Comparative
government. Additional emphasis will be placed on analysis,
expository writing, and primary source readings.
Practical Law
(1/2 year, 1/2 credit)
This course is an
Introduction to Law and The American legal System, Criminal and
Juvenile Justice, and Individual Rights and Liberties. The
course will utilize case studies, problems, role playing,
clarification strategies, and legal documents to develop
law-related skills.
