Grades 9 - 12 Course
Offerings: World Languages FRENCH
French I
The course is intended for beginners, as well as students who
have taken French but have not mastered the basic skills. Each
unit assesses listening comprehension, encourages oral
expression, and involves activities in writing.
French II
Prerequisite: Successful
completion of 7th Grade (IA) & 8th Grade (IB) language study
or French I at high school. A minimum grade of C is recommended
for success.
The course continues the basic study of French, including the
study of elementary grammatical structures and the cultures of
the French speaking world. The focus continues to be on
developing proficiency in aural comprehension, speaking,
reading, and writing.
French III
This course continues to develop the language skills of
listening, speaking, reading and writing in the context of
everyday life in the French-speaking world. Previously learned
structures are reviewed and reinforced; new grammatical concepts
and tenses are presented in context.
French IV - Honors
This course helps develop and refine oral and written
proficiency. A variety of contemporary and historical short
stories, articles, music and poetry serve as a vehicle to
examine literary, artistic and political figures of the
francophone world.
French V -
Advanced Placement
Prerequisite: Teacher
recommendation is required. This course also fulfills the
requirements of the Univ. of Connecticut cooperative program for
6 credits.
The main objective is to develop students' communication skills
in French, in preparation for the AP French examination, with
emphasis on grammar study, conversation, and composition.
SPANISH
Spanish I
The course is intended for beginners, as well as students who
have taken Spanish but have not mastered the basic skills. Each
unit assesses listening comprehension, encourages oral
expression, and involves activities in writing.
Spanish II
Prerequisite: Successful
completion of 7th & 8th Grade Spanish I. A minimum grade of
C is recommended for success.
This course concentrates
on the development of oral and written proficiency through
presentations and compositions. A variety of customs and
traditions of the Spanish world are presented to sensitize the
student to cultural differences.
Spanish III
Recommendation: A minimum grade of C in Level II is recommended
for success.
This course is based upon
students' knowledge of tenses, and builds vocabulary and verb
usage using Cultural, Conversational, and Literary Readings.
Students are expected to answer and speak in complete Spanish
sentences. There are 4 major writings throughout the year.
Spanish IV
This course reviews the
grammar topics and verb tenses already learned, and continues
the study of the subjunctive mood. More complex readings are
introduced along with more extensive writings and analysis of
literary works. The class is conducted entirely in Spanish.
Spanish IV - Honors
Teacher recommendation is required.
This honors course deals
with the development of more complex reading, writing and
listening skills. Students are introduced to literary works of
famous Spanish writers. Vocabulary and grammar is enhanced
through the reading and analysis of literature.
Spanish V
Teacher
recommendation is required.
Famous Spanish writers
are introduced, and their works are analyzed. Oral and written
skills are expected to reach a high level of proficiency by the
end of the year. The reading of a novel will be part of the
curriculum.
Spanish V - AP
This course also fulfills
the requirements of the Univ. of Connecticut cooperative program
for 6 credits.
This course prepares
students for the AP Spanish exam and helps develop the students'
communication skills in Spanish. The reading of a novel will be
part of the curriculum.
