World Languages Curriculum Philosophy

    The World Language department affirms and supports the belief that language and communication is at the heart of the human experience. Therefore, the study of languages and cultures provides enriching benefits:

-it broadens intellectual perspectives;
-increases awareness of self and others, and
-encourages participation in a wider global community.

    All individuals can be successful learners of languages and cultures if provided programs and opportunities that match their instructional approach to their personal needs. Languages learning is in some ways unique. It can be learned naturally without conscious effort and without formal instruction, as in the case of young children. In addition, language acquisition can occur through exposure and use outside of school environments through immersion into the culture. It is critical for all students to become linguistically equipped to function in a variety of cultural settings. Therefore, to be competitive and better equipped in tomorrow's society, it is recommended that students develop and maintain a proficiency in at least one other language.
