D’ANGELO
NAMED CONNECTICUT’S HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Pomperaug High School band
director Robert D’Angelo was recently named the 2005
Connecticut High School Music Teacher of the Year by the
Connecticut Music Educator’s Association (CMEA) and received
an award at the association’s 61st In-Service Conference on
March 19, 2005.
Each year, CMEA names a music
teacher of the year for the elementary/middle school level, high
school level, and administration.
“It is quite an honor to be chosen as High School Music
Teacher of the Year by my peers,” said Mr. D’Angelo. “My
wife, Jeanne, who works at Memorial Middle School won a few
years back, so we may be the only husband-wife who’ve both
been named as teacher of the year.” The Connecticut Music Educators Association is the largest association of professional educators dedicated to a specific content area in the state. With over 1,200 members, CMEA represents music educators from every grade level in public and private schools, as well as universities and colleges.
This year, Robert D’Angelo was nominated by his student-teacher and Pomperaug High School graduate, Mark Focarile.
“This is a well-deserved recognition for Bob,” said James Agostine, principal of Pomperaug High School. “He is passionate about teaching our students and goes above and beyond the expected in all that he does.” The Friends of Pomperaug Music also recognized his dedication to the students and the department. “We all feel very strongly that Pomperaug High School has the finest high school music department in the state, if not the country, due in large part to Mr. D’Angelo.” “Bob is the consummate professional; he is a marvelous teacher with great talent as a musician. He cares deeply for the students of Region 15, always goes the extra mile, and motivates all students to be lovers of music, learning and life,” said Jane Sarjeant, Director of Fine Arts.
