ADVISORY COUNCIL
Did
You Know…?
The
Region 15 Wellness Committee is developing nutrition and
physical activity policies to encourage healthy and balanced
lifestyles in students.
The
Region 15 Wellness Committee meets to create the district’s
nutrition and physical activity policy components, and to
address methods for promoting physical education, informed food
choices, and healthy lifestyles.
-
In June 2004,
the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring all school
districts that have a federally-funded school meals program
to develop and implement wellness policies that address
nutrition and physical activity. These policies must be
established by the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year.
-
The School
Wellness Policy must include goals for nutrition education
and physical activity to promote student wellness; include
nutrition guidelines for all foods available at school;
involve parents, students, school representatives, and the
community in the development of the policy; among other
goals.
-
The
Region 15 Wellness Committee was established in November
2005, almost a year in advance of the federally-mandated
date, and is made up of parents, students, and school
administrators, as well as representatives of the
District’s food services and health education departments.
-
In conjunction
with efforts set forth by some Region 15 parents, the
Wellness Committee is also working with the food services
department to create and provide healthier menu selections
in the schools.
