DID YOU KNOW…

     Region 15 received a Math Science Partnership two-year federal grant that allows Region 15 to employ an Elementary District Math Coach who works with all the elementary schools within Region 15.

      Mr. Jeff Haddad, the Elementary District Math Coach, is a professional resource for Kindergarten – Grade 5 elementary teachers.

A former PES 5^th grade teacher, Mr. Haddad received intensive training (approximately 100 hours) in the areas of instructional coaching, pedagogy, and other learning strategies related to mathematics. His training continues, and now spends approximately one day a week at each of the four elementary schools within Region 15.  He works together with the teachers to observe, collaborate and co-teach lessons in their classrooms in an effort to improve student learning.   

Some of the goals for this position over the next two years are to:

·        Improve teachers’ understanding of mathematics content and processes;

·        Strengthen teachers’ knowledge of specific teaching methods in mathematics;

·        Develop and strengthen coaching relationships with teachers;

·        Facilitate teacher analysis of qualitative and quantitative student data;

·        Develop District and school support for instructional coaching as a tool for improvement in mathematics teaching and learning; and

·        Raise student achievement in elementary mathematics.

Jeff Haddad:  “I will be acting in a collaborative role with teachers, not an evaluative one. A good coach is empathetic, a good listener, and can bring out quality skills in people.  I will also help bring another perspective to the classroom.”

Region 15 is fortunate to be one of only 30 school districts within the State of Connecticut to reap the benefits of this Math Science Partnership grant.
