DID YOU KNOW?

Your involvement in your child’s education can contribute to a lifelong love of learning.

Here are 10 tips to get your child off to a great start this school year.

1.    Attend Back to School Night and talk with your child’s teacher to establish early communication.

2.    Become involved in your child’s school in any way you can.  Attend school events or PTO meetings.  All parents and guardians of Region 15 students are members of their school’s PTO.

3.    Set aside a time each day when you and your child can discuss their school day and other issues of importance to them.

4.    Designate a place for their backpack and create a quiet workspace for homework with proper supplies on hand.  Provide ample time to complete homework and take time to review what they’ve done.

5.    Have your children read for 20 minutes each day.  Stimulate your child’s growing interests by making a variety of reading materials available at home.  Discuss current events to promote an interest in learning about the world.

6.    Establish a reasonable bed time.  Pre-school and school-age children should receive 10 - 11 hours of sleep each night.

7.    Use a large calendar to keep track of school and after school schedules and events, to help your child prepare and plan ahead.

8.    Prepare for the school morning on the evening before, by selecting clothes, planning lunch and having backpacks zipped and ready to go.

9.    Promote good health habits with balanced meals and proper exercise.  Start off the school day with a good breakfast.

     10.  Talk to your child about expectations and concerns regarding school and emphasize effort rather than grades.  Be positive about education and share your own love of learning.
