Dr. Paul Jones, Principal of PHS with (L-R) Giovanni Romano, Winson Chen, Caroline DePalma and Michelle Lu, 12th grade students at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, CT, who were recognized as 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students were recognized at the Region 15 Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 21, 2019.
“It is a privilege to recognize our students for their outstanding achievement. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. We are proud of our students for representing Region 15 so well,” said Mr. Joshua Smith, Superintendent of Region 15 Schools.
Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
Students will be notified in early February if they have advanced to Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
