Family Involvement and School Communication

Good communication between families and school is the foundation of all family involvement in education.

When parents get their children ready to go back to school, they spend a lot of time buying the right supplies in hopes that their child will be prepared for the first day. However, one of the best ways to ensure a child's success is by maintaining open lines of communication among parents, teachers, and students.

An open flow of information among parents, teachers, and students increases the likelihood that students will take their education more seriously and that early gaps in a child's learning will be identified.

Many parents in Region 15 attended school open houses during the last two weeks of September. More open houses are scheduled in October, see GES and PES schedules by clicking here. At these open houses, teachers reviewed what the students will be learning throughout the year, how parents can reach the teacher during school or after school hours, and how parents can help their children be successful academically.

If you, as a parent or guardian, ever have any concerns or questions about your child's education, please feel free to first contact the classroom teacher. Call to arrange a convenient time to meet with your child's teacher. Your next contact should be the school principal or vice principal. Call the school office to arrange a meeting time.

Region 15 will continue to provide timely information via a home/school communication system that focuses on school events and activities, such as quarterly Board of Education newsletters, "Community Connections" email newsletter, improved website information, and school flyers. Finding ways to use new technology, such as voice mail and e-mail, can greatly increase two-way communication. We are striving toward a robust e-mail system so parents and teachers can communicate online. This should be up-and-running by next school year.

If you ever have any questions, and don't know who to contact, please contact the School/Home/Community Liaison Karen Kirk through email or by phone at 264-3491.
