University of Arizona, Center for Insect Science - Our objectives are to develop new integrated education materials that foster the use of live insects as teaching models and to offer teacher training in background information about arthropods and how to use them in the classroom. Both Using Live Insects in Elementary Classrooms and Acres of Insects are funded by grants from the National Institute of Health - Science Education Partnership Award.

How to Make Mini Books - Two mini books are included in this instruction guide for creating your own mini-books, for either eight pages, twelve pages, or sixteen page booklets. Start off with the smaller samples for students to assemble, using magazine pictures or students' own illustrations to create a rhyme or alphabet booklet. Early elementary students will be very proud of their results, and you'll be helping to encourage a love of books and reading with this creative activity; it also makes a great project on an "All About Me" theme for an Open House Night display.

    plan, where students paint abstract visual color patterns while listening to music. Experiment with various types of music for different results.
  • Crepe Paper Blots - Experiment with color and expressive art, along with a little bit of kitchen chemistry. Crepe paper can be cut into different shapes and sizes for different effects. The vinegar is the catalyst for allowing the dye and

Seven lesson plans comprise this Thanksgiving unit on the Pilgrims, adaptable for grades three through eight.  Students will examine reasons why Pilgrims came to the New World, what a voyage on the Mayflower may have been like, what Pilgrims experienced that first winter in Plymouth, and what the origins are for American Thanksgiving traditions. The Valley of the Shadow - Primary documents form the basis of this online archive, showing the Civil War from two different but very real perspectives: north and south. Have students use the documents to create a fictional narrative or to write newspaper articles to document an event or time period.

Civil War Recipes - Hard tack was a staple of the Civil War. Have your students whip up a few authentic period recipes to wind up your Civil War unit with an exhibit and presentation day,
complete with food and costume.
