Overview of Music
Music experiences that children in grade K-5 at Gainfield participate in are singing, movement, creating, listening and playing of classroom instruments. Through these experiences, your child learns and discovers musical concepts such as pitch, beat, dynamics, timbre, form and the reading of musical notation. Studying music through these avenues improves learning skills, develops gross and fine motor skills while fostering creativity. The development of concentration, discrimination, memory and awareness all play a very important part of one’s education and learning these skills through music is a joyful experience for your child. Listening experiences at Gainfield expose your child to the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Ellington. Our performing groups at Gainfield are fourth grade chorus, fifth grade chorus, fifth grade band and strings. All fifth grade students have the option to begin the study of a band or string instrument. Our music curriculum at Gainfield grades K – 5 focuses on the discovery of the singing voice and development of independent singing through a rich repertoire of traditional and folk literature. Development and competency of maintaining a steady beat while singing or chanting is an essential part of music at Gainfield. Grades 3 – 5 begin to develop skills in reading musical notation based on musical skills developed in grades K-2. In the fourth grade students learn how to play a recorder which is a great introduction to playing an instrument in fifth grade. In fourth and fifth grade students make their first attempts at jazz improvisation on Orff instruments and recorder. Through the implementation of jazz in our curriculum students better understand melody, harmony, beat, rhythm and how these musical concepts function within form. Be sure to mark your calendar for our annual Mother- Son Square Dance on Friday, March 14, 2008, grades 1-5.
