promotion/retention

Policy

It is the policy of the Region 15 Board of Education that the decision regarding the placement, promotion, or retention of each student in grades kindergarten to 12 will be consistent with his/her academic progress, mental development, social adjustment in relation to peers, physical well-being, and general emotional stability.  It is to be noted that retention of a student must be made only with recognition of the following factors:

Before retention can be considered, it is essential that provisions be made to encourage student growth.

2.

It should be noted that the optimum time for retention is in the primary grades.

3.

Trial promotion is not to be utilized.

4.

Parents of students being considered for retention should be notified at the earliest feasible date.

5.

The final decision as to retention resides with the Principal after consultation with the staff and parents.  The parents have the right to appeal this decision to the Superintendent and the Board of Education.

6.

The policy and regulations regarding promotion and retention shall be outlined in the student/parent handbook of each school.
