Policy |

|
|
|
|
|
Purpose:
|
|
|
It is the policy
of the Board of Education of Region 15 Board of
Education to provide a self-supporting summer school
program for students. The program shall provide
opportunities for students who need to develop basic
skills through remedial and/or enrichment activities.
The program shall also provide opportunities for
students in high school to make up credit due to
failures in courses during the regular school year.
With the approval of the Principal, high school student
who wish to earn additional credits as part of meeting
the requirements for a diploma may take a limited number
of accelerated courses (a course taken for the first
time). |
| |
|
|
|
Student fees will
fund all operative expenses for the program. All fees
must be paid in advance. The summer school will refund
fees for courses that do not have sufficient
enrollment. Students dismissed for disciplinary reasons
will not receive a refund. Transportation is the
responsibility of the parents. All teachers will be
certified by the State of Connecticut. |
| |
|
|
|
1. |
Any
student may register for a course designed to develop
basic skills or provide enrichment, providing he or she
qualifies for the grade level for which the course has
been developed. |
|
|
2. |
Permission to
undertake a course for credit in the Region 15 Summer
School, any other area summer school, or by a tutor must
be obtained in advance from the Principal or his/her
designee. |
|
|
3. |
A student taking
a course for accelerated credit must complete 60 hours
of course-work plus a final exam to earn .5 credit. A
student taking accelerated courses may apply no more
than 1.5 credits toward graduation requirements. Only
semester courses qualify for accelerated credit. |
|
|
4. |
A student who has
earned an F+ (50 – 64) and attended the course at least
three-quarters of the time may make up the failure in
summer school by successfully completing 30 hours of
course-work and a final exam. A student who achieves a
final grade of F will not be able to make up the course
in any summer school. An exception would be a senior
who has failed a required course for graduation and
agrees to make it up at a recognized accredited college
institution. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
A student may,
within the requirements of this policy, make up the
failure with an approved tutor. A student must complete
work as dictated by the Pomperaug High School
curriculum. Twenty (20) hours of tutoring is equivalent
to thirty (30) hours of class time in summer school. A
student who attends a summer school other than Region 15
or completes the required number of hours with an
approved tutor must take the Pomperaug High School’s
Department exam to receive credit. This exam must be
taken within ten (10) days of the student’s return to
Pomperaug High School in the fall. |

|
|
Credit for Summer
School: |
| |
|
|
1. |
A student will
receive one (1) credit for making up a full-year course
or .5 credit for making up a semester course. |
|
|
2. |
The student’s
grade for the summer school course will be added to his
or her transcript. The grade shall be determined by
averaging the grade for the course-work with the grade
on the final exam. |
|
|
3. |
Any student
missing more than two meetings of a summer school credit
course, for any reason, will automatically be withdrawn
from the course and receive no credit. Three tardies
will count as one absence. |
