Policy |
It is the policy
of the Region 15 Board of Education to provide students
with a safe, convenient, and private place to keep or
store clothing, books, and other personal articles when
not in actual use. Individual lockers are made
available to students for this purpose. |
Lockers are not
owned by students; they are State property held in trust
by the Board of Education of Regional School District
15. While regulating and supervising their use, school
administrators act as agents of the owners, the State.
The use of the
lockers is limited to the keeping or storing of those
articles which, by their nature or presence on school
property, do not violate any applicable State of local
law, regulation or ordinance, rules of the Board of
Education or jeopardize the health, safety, or welfare
of persons occupying the school. To illustrate, the
depositing of liquor, guns, gasoline, or other flammable
or explosive materials in a locker is prohibited. |
It is expected
that lockers will be clean and orderly. |
If the school
administration has reasonable cause to believe that
there is an article in a student’s locker which does not
conform to these limitations, the Principal or his
designee shall have the authority to open and inspect
the locker for the suspected article. This authority
shall be exercised in such a way as to give respect to
the privacy of the student’s locker consistent with the
safety and welfare of the occupants of the school.
Subject to the foregoing limitation, the student whose
locker is to be inspected shall , when reasonable, be
present at the time his locker is opened. |
In all cases, the
inspection shall be carried out by the Principal or his
designee. |
Notification of
this policy shall be sent to parents of new students at
the beginning of their first year in the high school. |
