Educating Special Education Students in the Least Restrictive Environment

Policy

It is the policy of the Region 15 Board of Education that any student who is suspected of having a significant developmental delay or disability which is seriously hindering a student's educational progress, and for whom alternative educational methods have been unsuccessful, be referred to an Individual Education Program team.  This team will determine the components of a comprehensive evaluation to be conducted by a team of professionals for each student who is referred.  If, as a result of these evaluations it is determined that the student meets criteria for a special education program and/or related services, the student will be provided a free appropriate public education and an individualized education program will be developed to meet the student’s special needs.  The IEP will ensure that educational programming will be provided in the least restrictive environment appropriate for the student, that is, the student will be educated in regular education classes with children who do not have disabilities to the maximum extent appropriate for that child.
