Summer Curriculum Work

The days immediately following the close of school marks the time when we are immersed in the work of revising and revamping curriculum.  This summer, Dr. Lanning and 32 staff members, representing kindergarten through Grade 12, began the work of revising our Language Arts curriculum.  Due to the scope of this work, it will take two to three years to fully develop and articulate all the revisions for Language Arts.

Also in June, 37 staff members, again representing kindergarten through grade 12, participated in Social Studies curriculum work.  Staff members focused on clarifying our commitment to conceptual understanding and creating curriculum units that will give students a better understanding of Social Studies.

Our curriculum evaluation and revision cycle ensures all disciplines will be regularly reviewed and revised in order to stay current, relevant, and rigorous.

GES Office Personnel Relocated to RMS Guidance Office After the 22nd of June, Gainfield Elementary School will be closed to visitors.  During this time, GES office personnel will be working from the Rochambeau Middle School Guidance Office.

Facilities Work at GES

On the 12th of July, I assessed the progress of the facilities work at Gainfield Elementary School, and I am happy to provide the following update:

  1. Asbestos containment areas and negative pressure environments must be in place prior to asbestos removal. The asbestos has been removed from the gym area, and clean up and plumbing repairs will proceed as soon as this area has been certified.  The containment areas and negative pressure environments are scheduled for installation in the tunnel area, and the clean-up work will then proceed.
  2. The radon remediation has started; and once the tunnel has been certified as asbestos free, the major portion of the remediation will occur.  The remediation for this area requires that we pour a concrete floor over the dirt surface.  Once the floor is in place, a negative pressure ventilation system will be installed.  The system removes radon gas from the ground and vents it to the outdoors.
  3. Roof repairs have been made to our portable classroom units, and the roofing company will repair the grade four roof once they have finished their work at RMS and MES.
  4. Specifications for the elementary schools’ electronic surveillance systems are complete and installation is scheduled to begin.

Although unanticipated delays may affect this timeline, I am confident most of the work will be completed in time for GES to be opened for visitors by the 20th of August.
