Congratulations to
Mr. James C. Agostine
Principal,
Pomperaug High School

Please join me in congratulating Mr. James Agostine, Principal of Pomperaug High School, upon his selection as the finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools in Region 16, Beacon Falls and Prospect.  Mr. Agostine is a very capable leader who will do an excellent job for the students, staff, and parents of Region 16.

In his 22 years of service in Region 15, Mr. Agostine served the Region as a Science Teacher, an Assistant Principal, and Principal of Memorial Middle School before being named Principal of Pomperaug High School in 2000.  Under Mr. Agostine’s leadership, Pomperaug High School continued the quest toward excellence.  During Mr. Agostine’s tenure, PHS was named as one of the top 5 percent of public high schools in the nation for Advanced Placement course participation, an honor PHS continues to enjoy.

We extend to Mr. Agostine our deepest appreciation for his excellent service to our children and to our School District.  His contributions to the excellence of Pomperaug High School and to the Region 15 schools are immeasurable.  I know you join me in congratulating Mr. Agostine and wishing him well in Region 16.

Electronic Surveillance Systems

The bid for the electronic surveillance systems was awarded in October.  The firm needed time to develop individual specifications for each school, which was more time consuming than originally planned. Vendors are presently working on installing the  wiring and laying the infrastructure to accommodate the surveillance systems Mr. McLiverty, Director of Finance, has communicated to the vendor our desire to see this project completed as soon as possible.

We have developed a preliminary order for the vendor to follow. We will begin in Middlebury because LMES, our prototype electronic surveillance system, requires some upgrades to bring it in line with the other new systems. The vendor will remain in Middlebury and most likely begin installation at MES and then move on to MMS.  The work at all three schools is expected to be completed by the 1st of January. The vendor will then move his operation to Southbury and begin installing the electronic surveillance systems at GES, PES, and finish up with RMS. The 31st of January is the targeted completion date. Weather, client emergencies, and unanticipated challenges at a school may factor into our installation schedule.  Our timetable is realistic but not absolute, and we will do our best to complete all schools as soon as possible.

World Language Dr. Lois A. Lanning, Assistant Superintendent, is currently working with the World Language Committee in developing their mission and a vision statement to reflect the needs of the 21st century global community.  Last year’s World Language audit revealed the need to increase the number of world language opportunities at PHS.  I am pleased to announce that at their meeting held on the 26th of November, the Board approved in concept the offering Mandarin and Latin I with the target date for 2008-09 school year. The viability of these courses is subject to Board approval through the budget development process.
