Pomperaug Pals Raise Money for Ronald McDonald House Charities

At Pomperaug Elementary School (PES), pocket change is making a positive change in the lives of children, through a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

Earlier this year, the Pomperaug Pals under the supervision of school Guidance Counselor, Kathleen Soltesz, were contacted by RMHC of CT and Western MA and asked if they would participate in their “Pennies for Change” fundraiser.

The Pomperaug Pals is a program for 5th graders that is designed to instill in students a sense of civic responsibility, community connectedness, and an involvement in global concerns.

“We chose to participate because the purpose of RMHC is to help children live happier, healthier and more productive lives,” explained Ms. Soltesz.  “We especially like the emphasis on children helping children", she said.

According to RMHC, through their grant making process, one-hundred percent of the monies raised directly benefits local children.  The funds are directed to locations such as schools, libraries, camps, hospitals, and other organizations such as Girl Scouts.

The three core programs of RMHC are the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.  Each is focused on helping families in need.

In addition to supporting the core programs, RMHC and its global network of local Chapters in 49 countries reports that it has awarded more than $440 million dollars in grants and program services worldwide to make an immediate, positive impact on as many children as possible.

From October through early December, the PES PALS were responsible for generating awareness and excitement for the coin drive.   “We spoke to students during recess and lunch about Ronald McDonald House and the good things they do for kids,” explained fifth grade PAL, Sarah C.   “We had newspaper publicity as well as regular school announcements encouraging all students to bring in their spare change,” she said.

The Pals visited every classroom on a daily basis to empty coin jars, and make deposits into the main canisters.  In less than three months, they collected over $1,100 for their charity.  “It felt really good and I think we should do it again next year, said Ryan D. whose mom Meg, helped with the fundraiser details, and frequent "bank runs" to make deposits.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities is working to better the lives of children and their families around the world,” said Soltesz.  I’m very proud of our PES family for playing a part in all that.”
