We will be visiting state capitals on our return trip to Connecticut!
Middlebury Elementary School is partnering with Brookside School in San Anselmo, California. Students jog and walk each morning and the miles accumulated by each school's students determines how far they have traveled across the country! Last year, Middlebury Elementary Students walked and ran enough miles to travel from Connecticut to California and back again! The purpose of this activity is to promote healthy habits that will contribute to lifelong fitness. Students also learn about geography and history while traveling across the country.
The ten-week marathon started March 3rd and will run until May 13th. Students are walking, running, or jogging in the gym or, weather permitting, outside before school, and during recess as they head west toward California. This fitness program, brought to Middlebury Elementary School last year by PTO member Krista Matthews, is designed to emphasize the importance of daily exercise.
“Last year, the marathon was a tremendous success due to the overwhelming
parental and community support,” said Mark Stockno, Middlebury Elementary School
physical education teacher. “With this school-wide program, the students are
learning geography, mathematics, and the benefits of exercise. Our school
district is promoting life-long health and wellness and this activity fits right
in with this goal.”
