Second Grade

The second grade curriculum at MES provides a variety of exciting learning opportunities.
Our social studies curriculum allows us to travel around the world and experience the similarities and differences of other cultures. This is accomplished through fiction and non-fiction reading selections.

In science, the children explore the Life Cycle of Plants, the Physical Science of Solids, Liquids, and Gases, and the Earth Science of Soil and Recycling through non-fiction literature and hands-on experiments. The Harcourt Collections basal reading series is used throughout the year along with a selection of popular trade books focusing on Guided Reading strategies.  Students are also exposed to Literature Circle book activities with their peers.
Students are given instruction using the Trailblazers Math program. This program allows all children to develop a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts of math that encourage problem-solving through a variety of strategies and approaches.
Our writing program consists of both processed and timed writing pieces that have been developed using the techniques from the Empowering Writers and 6+1 Traits Programs.   As the year progresses, students work on improving their stories using a variety of these special techniques.
