WFSB-TV METEOROLOGIST TO SPEAK TO MEMORIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADERS

Melissa Cole to Talk About Science Career and Meteorology

February 9, 2004, Middlebury/Southbury – Melissa Cole, meteorologist at WFSB-TV in Hartford (Channel 3), will be speaking to the 8th grade girls and boys at Memorial Middle School on Wednesday, February 11th about her career in science and meteorology. Ms. Cole will address the eighth grade class in two groups. The two assemblies (9-10am and 10-11am) will be held in the school band room. The students will also have prepared questions for Ms. Cole.

“I am proud to say that I taught life science to Melissa at Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford years ago,” said Richard Panek, now assistant principal at Memorial Middle School. “As a former science teacher, the field is very important to me and I’m sure Melissa will be able to share some of her love for meteorology and science with our students.”

Mr. Panek discovered Melissa one Saturday morning when he saw her name as she was starting her forecast. Although it was 16 years later and she was one of the over 2,500 students that Mr. Panek had taught as a teacher, he recognized both her name and face. Through e-mails, he confirmed that it was indeed the “quiet and shy” former student.

“I’ve had students who have become doctors and scientists, but as far as I know, Melissa is the first former student who is now a meteorologist,” said Mr. Panek.

Melissa Cole joined the WFSB-TV Eyewitness Weather Team in October 2003. Raised in West Hartford, Ms. Cole went to Sedgwick Middle School and Conard High School before studying Meteorology and Spanish at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Prior to teaming up with Channel 3, she worked in Binghamton, NY and Harrisburg, PA.

“If any students are thinking about a career in meteorology, I would steer them toward their science and math classes, as this is the core of the coursework at college,” said Ms. Melissa Cole. “The main thing I want the eighth-graders to know is that you can truly achieve anything as long as you put your mind to it. I worked very hard toward my goal of being a meteorologist and I didn’t just get here by luck. I’m living proof that dreams really can come true as long as you work for them.”
