MMS History and Program
Memorial
Middle School
was originally built and opened in 1953 as a K-8 school for the town of
Middlebury
. Since that time, significant changes have occurred to the grade levels
served, total number of students, and it’s architecture. The
Library-Media
Center
was added in 1981, two modular classrooms were added in 1993.
With the incorporation of “Regional School
District 15” in the 1970’s, MMS served middle school aged children
from Middlebury and the “East-side” of Southbury, and the school’s
enrollment ranged between 300-380.
The school received the highest honor available in 1989 when it was named
an a
National
Exemplary
Secondary School
by the U.S. Department of Education.
In the late 1990’s the enrollment topped 400 for the first time, and it
is currently approximately 555. Enrollment projections, based on
current elementary grade enrollments and home building activity, predict
the school population will swell to over 600 students by 2011.
The renovation project of 2003 added a new full-size gym, a new
Music/Choral Room, two general classroom spaces, and moved the
administrative and guidance offices in the old gym space. Unified Arts
rooms were moved to the center of the building and reduced in size.
The school program includes the full range of “typical” middle school
courses. These include the following –
