5th Grade Music Program

Many of us who have either studied an instrument ourselves or raised a child who was involved in a music program can attest that witnessing a child’s musical progress is amazing.

In fourth grade, Region 15 students are introduced to the recorder, opening up a whole new musical experience for children by involving them with a melodic instrument. The recorder is considered a preparation for playing a band or string instrument.

In September of their fifth grade, the boys and girls continue their music literacy skills. They are introduced to a variety of instruments, ranging from the strings, wind, and percussion instruments. Three out of four Region 15 elementary school children then select an instrument to study.

“We try to give them their first choice but we need to create a balance in order to properly design a school band and orchestra,” said Mr. Don West, music teacher.

The students are required to practice 20 minutes per day, five days of the week. They are enrolled in weekly lessons as well as in a full band or orchestra rehearsal.

The teachers encourage the students to do their best in rehearsal. “When you’re doing something for the first time, the correct sound may not come out,” said Mr. West to a young trumpeter at his practice recently. “The important thing is that you keep trying.” The boy and his teacher high-fived each other once he got the right sound out.

A short, three-months after receiving their instruments, the school band and orchestra perform a demonstration concert for their parents, siblings, friends, and relatives. The children also prepare for a Spring Concert near the end of the school year.

“Music instruction teaches a student about commitment, balancing time, discipline, and schedule,” said Ms. Sarah Siegler, strings teacher. “It benefits the whole child.”
