POMPERAUG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 5TH GRADERS ARE PALS TO KENSINGTON GREEN RESIDENTS

Students Host Talent Show on May 6th (3:30pm) at Kensington Green

April 30, 2004, Middlebury/Southbury—Every month, twenty-six girls and boys from Pomperaug Elementary School take a short walk to visit and work on a craft activity with their next-door neighbors at Kensington Green in Southbury. The select group of fifth-graders call themselves “Pomperaug Pals” and they spend one hour each month sitting, talking, and getting to know the residents at the facility.

On May 6 at 3:30pm, the students will be holding a talent show for the seniors to showcase their singing, dancing, and musical abilities. All the residents of Kensington Green are invited to attend.

“Some girls and boys bring their instruments to play for the residents at an unplanned concert,” said school counselor Stefanie Clifford, Pomperaug Pals advisor. “In the past, the children and the seniors have made cards together for the Connecticut Children’s Hospital and dipped Easter eggs. They’re making an intergenerational connection with each other.”

At the end of fourth grade, interested Pomperaug Elementary School students can apply to become a Pomperaug Pal. They must write an essay explaining why they wish to be a Pal and have a parent and teacher sign their application. Although there are no strict grade guidelines, all Pomperaug Pals must maintain a good academic standing and be an example to other students by their good behavior.

The Pomperaug Pals also volunteer at many community activities, including serving as leaders during new family orientation, Salvation Army bell ringers, bus buddies, and food sorters at the Southbury Food Bank.

“Our partnership with Kensington Green is unique to Pomperaug Elementary School and we’ve enjoyed this special relationship ever since they opened a few years ago,” said Mrs. Clifford. “The residents truly enjoy their visits and the students have a chance to be themselves. Everyone is relaxed and has a nice time together.”
