Second Grade

Second grades are studying life cycles and have planted brassica seeds. As the plants grow, the students record their observations and learn about the sequence of changes in the life cycle of a brassica. The students enjoy watching these fast plants grow under the light in the classroom. Second graders had some great fun as they used KidPix to create diagrams to track the life cycle of their brassica seeds. Later they turned their diagrams into slideshows and then into Quicktime movies. Below you will find samples of some of the movies. You'll need the free Quicktime player to view them. You can download it at Quicktime.com. If you have an ipod you probably already have it.

Mrs. Fein’s and Miss Broden’s class celebrated the holiday of Thanksgiving with their own ‘Friendship Feast’.  Each child contributed a favorite fruit or snack to create a fruit salad and a trail mix to enjoy together.  Mrs. Fein’s class surprised and showed thanks for their friends in Miss Broden’s class by weaving homemade placemats for everyone.  Miss Broden’s class surprised their friends in Mrs. Fein’s class with place cards to use for the feast.  The friends sang Thanksgiving songs and recited poems, then enjoyed their homemade feast together!

The children in Mrs. Tyler’s class are measuring objects using centimeter strips.  These strips are used to measure small objects.  We will use meters or meters and centimeters for larger measurements.

As part of the unit on plants, students in second grade are now growing grain seeds. The students used straws and paper towels to provide support and water for the seeds. They will be observing the leaves and roots as the wheat grows.

Second graders learned about using meters and centimeters to measure distances. In this lesson, students measured and recorded the distance rolled by cars coming down a ramp.

The students in Mrs. Tyler’s 2nd grade class recently performed a skit to the story of “Hedgehog Bakes a Cake”.  The children completed comprehension tasks, character study, and story elements before the culminating activity of the play
