Pomperaug Elementary School (PES), Select Art Students, displayed art work in a gallery show at Carole Peck’s Good News Café at 694 Main Street South in Woodbury.

From March 6th through April 12th, 5th graders in the PES Select Art Program will have their still life paintings on view to restaurant patrons.  A gallery opening, entitled “Beginnings”, opened to the public on March 6.

According to PES Art Teacher, Nancy Neal, students were asked to create their own interpretation of a still life comprised of lemons, limes and oranges.  A photograph of the arrangement was taken for students to view from week to week as their piece progressed.  “The rest is history,” said Ms. Neal.  “The acrylic paintings done on 24” X 30” stretched canvasses, are awesome and shouldn’t be missed.”

“We are very excited about the opportunity for these talented young artists to have their first taste of a gallery show,” said Region 15, Director of Fine Arts, Jane Sarjeant.  “Not only is it a wonderful experience for them, this is a great chance for local residents to view student art work.”

Several years ago, Good News Café employee, Jeanne Johnson, brought the idea of displaying student artwork at the café to Ms. Sarjeant.  According to Ms. Johnson, Carole Peck and her husband, Bernard Jarrier, have run a gallery, featuring local and internationally known artists, at the Good News Café ever since it opened.  “They have really made it a priority to bring art to the community through their restaurant”, said Ms. Johnson.  “Working with students in Region 15, has been a natural extension of their efforts.”

“I’m really excited about having my painting in a gallery show,” said PES student, Henry Archie.  “It’s pretty cool that other people, besides our art teacher, will get to see work from our entire class.”

The Good News Café is open Wednesday through Monday and closed on Tuesdays.  Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a café bar menu available from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. and dinner from 5:00 p.m. till closing.

The gallery will be displayed until April 12. It can be seen at the restaurant's website at: www.good-news-cafe.com/Gallery/youngartists.
