Pomperaug High School seniors Joanna R. and Frank S. have been named the 2015 PHS recipients of the Scholar-Athlete Award.
The Connecticut Association of Schools-Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CAS-CIAC) Scholar-Athlete Program annually recognizes two high school seniors - one boy and one girl - from each member high school whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage.
Both Joanna and Frank rank in the top five percent of the graduating class of 2015, have achieved numerous academic and athletic awards, are leaders in extracurricular activities and honor societies, and maintain a rigorous advanced placement and honors level course load.
On the athletic field, Joanna has been a three-year varsity starter and co-captain on the Pomperaug High School Field Hockey team. She also is a member of the PHS Track team.
“Throughout Joanna’s career there have been some tough losses, and at the end of the games, it took true character to display sportsmanship and move forward toward the season’s goals,” said PHS field hockey coach, Anne Strobel.
She is President of the Bullet Hill Chapter of the National Honor Society and Interact Club, and has participated in many community service projects throughout her years at Pomperaug.
Frank S. has been a member of the varsity Cross Country, Swimming, and Outdoor Track and Field teams at Pomperaug High School, and was named captain for cross country and track during his senior year. Sinapi is also a member of the PHS band, Tri-M music honor society, and Science national honor society.
He has also raised money for and participated in the Luck2Tuck Swim and Paddle for a Cure event, an annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer research.
In November 2014, Joanna and Frank were among those students named 2015 National Merit Commended Students. PHS Principal Glenn Lungarini presented the students with a letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation to these scholastically talented seniors.
The 2015 CAS-CIAC Scholar Athlete Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 3 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. More than 300 students will be honored this year for their achievements. The event will feature a keynote speaker, and the presentation of the Michael H. Savage Spirit of Sport Award.
Since its inception, the Annual Connecticut High School Scholar-Athlete Awards Program and Banquet has honored over 4,000 outstanding graduating seniors in Connecticut high schools. It has become the premier annual event in Connecticut’s education community, looked forward to by the member high schools of Connecticut as the opportunity to recognize student excellence in academics, athletics and school and community leadership.
“Frank and Joanna are both outstanding people. They represent their school and families very well by their effort academically and athletically. We are very proud to have them represent Pomperaug High School as our CAS-CIAC Scholar-Athlete Award winners," said Region 15 Athletic Director Joseph Velardi.
