On February 13, 2015, the Pomperaug High School Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track Team participated in the Class L State Championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The teams are led by head coach Steve Prajer and assistant coach Jeff Craig.
The boys’ team was highlighted by career-best performances by Alexander A. in the 1,000 meter run, and Luke T. in the 55 meter high hurdles. They placed third and fourth place, respectively, and led the boys to a 12th place finish at the meet. They will both move on to the CIAC State Open Championships on February 21.
The girls’ team followed up a second place team performance in the Southwest Conference (SWC) Championship by placing third overall as a team in the Class L State Championships. The girls were led by two outstanding performances in the 4x800 Relay and the Sprint Medley Relay, both finishing in first place and setting season records for the girls. Seniors Maggie K. and Rachel M. and Juniors Sara T., Lindsay S., Allison M. and Michaela M. achieved All State honors for their efforts on these relays. The 4x200 Relay of Maggie K., Alexa P., Lissandra M. and Rachel M. pulled off a fifth place finish with their best time of the season and will be joining their teammates to compete in the State Open Championships in New Haven. Michaela M. and Sara T. will also compete individually in the 600 and 1000 meter races after their strong performances at the Class L Championships.
Several athletes on the boys’ and girls’ teams also earned recognition for their achievements during the SWC Championships on February 7. They include:
1st Team All SWC Girls: Maggie K. (Sprint Medley), Allison M. (4x800), Michaela M. (4x800, Sprint Medley, 600m), Lexi P. (Sprint Medley), Lindsey S. (4x800, Sprint Medley) and Sara T. (4x800)
2nd Team All SWC Boys: Alexander A. (1000m)
