9/10/2015 - PHS Art Teacher Honored by Philadelphia University
During a ceremony in Philadelphia, the President, the Provost and the Board of Trustees of Philadelphia University honored PHS fine arts teacher Florin Ion Firimita for his work in education. Philadelphia University physician assistant studies student, Claire Domogala who studied under Firimita during her years at Pomperaug High School, nominated her former art teacher.
On August 20, 2015, in front of an audience of about 5,000 participants, Mr. Firimita was presented with the Centennial Medal Award. The medal was created in 1984 to celebrate Philadelphia University's 100th Anniversary. It honors prominent individuals in education, business, government, science or civic life who inspire, help students develop their potential, challenge and support them in the pursuit of their goals.
Incoming freshmen were asked to write an essay about who made a huge difference in their lives. Four recipients were selected nationwide from 500 nominees. This is Mr. Firimita’s fourth national medal for teaching and mentoring, after receiving gold medals from Scholastics in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
