PTO ADVISORY COUNCIL MINUTES

WED January 3rd 2007

Attendees: Nannette Dorsey, Liz Falconer, Len Hamm, Connie Herr, Carol Hubert, Sue Isaacs, Julie Koulouris, Jackie Mulhall, Stefanie O’Connor, Janice Phillips-Robinson, Juan Rodriguez -Torrent, Glen Shipway, Fran Tepperman, Sandi Carbonari Welsh

I.                    November 6th 2006 meeting minutes approved with correction of meeting date.  There was no December 2006 meeting.

II.                 Treasurer’s Report. Current balance is $2335.65.    One school still left to make donation.

     III.        Dr. Frank Sippy

Dr. Sippy was unavailable due to the Administrative Council meeting. Len Hamm presented Dr.

Sippy’s report.   The Alert Now emergency notification system passed the first test on Wednesday,

12/27/06.   Out of 3000+ contact about 85 need to be updated.  We plan on using the old system of notifying parents of weather related delays in school scheduling.  We hope to be ready to use the new system sometime in February.

Glen Shipway suggested that the system use all forms of contacts (phone, email, text messages) not just one to ensure reaching all parents.

    IV.         Glen Shipway

Mr. Shipway asked for input from committee members regarding the Region 15 elementary and middle school math program in response to a letter in the Voices newspaper.  There was long discussion on several key points of the program.  It was decided that Len would ask Dr. Lois Lanning to give the committee an update on the program and present the results of any reviews of the program since it began.  It was also suggested that several meetings be set up with Dr. Lanning and parents to share information and concerns.

The subject of a Student Resource Officer (SRO) will be revisited at the next Southbury Board of Selectmen meeting.  Mr. Shipway asked for input from the committee regarding the role and responsibilities of the SRO.  There was a long discussion on this topic also.  It was suggested that a coordinated effort of benefits and facts be brought forth by Dr. Sippy and Mr. Agostine to the Southbury Board of Selectmen at the meeting on 1/25/06.  It was suggested that a PHS committee member help with this effort.  Sue Isaacs agreed to work with the PHS PTO president, Dr. Sippy and Mr. Agostine to gather information for the Board of Selectmen meeting.

     V.        Carol Hubert

The new police contract is settled.

      VI.          New Business

The DYK is complete and was distributed.  It will also be emailed to all PTO Advisory members.

Sandy reported on Project Panther.  Funds are being raised to install additional stands/bleachers and bathroom facilities for Ed Arum field at the high school.  This is funded through grants, fundraisers and donations, not by Region 15.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7th.
