ADVISORY COUNCIL MINUTES WED September 5th 2007 Attendees: Meg DeRidder, Kathy DeRienzo, Nannette Dorsey, Liz Falconer, Kelley Gurvis, Len Hamm, Connie Herr, Carol Hubert, Sue Isaacs, Suzanne Kenishea, Julie Koulouris, Jackie Muhall, Stefanie O’Connor, Janice Phillips-Robinson, Juan Rodriguez-Torrent, Glen Shipway, Dr. Frank Sippy, Sandi Carbonari Welsh
I. Treasurer’s Report. Current balance is $2070.56. Due to the amount of money in our account a motion was made to ask all Region 15 schools to earmark their yearly donation to the PTO Advisory in their budgets but to hold off sending the donation until further notice in the spring. The motion passed. II. Dr. Frank Sippy 98% of the buses are in the lot by 4:30 pm. There were many facility improvements over the summer. The majority of the work done was at GES and included asbestos abatement, roof repairs to portables & 4th grade wing, portables painted and some windows were replaced. Region 15 was selected to host education tours at PHS on October 24th to showcase our school. Those participating in the tour will be legislators, commissioners, state BOE members and educators from CT. A public session is planned at the end and available students may assemble for a “town” like meeting. The representative from China is due to visit this fall. Not many new teachers added this year. It was a very smooth opening to the school year. There are currently 19 portables in the region. Friday, September 28th is first PHS home varsity football game. There will be a dedication ceremony for the new stands. The Project Panther Group did a tremendous job. III. Glen Shipway, BOE PTO Advisory Rep.
The first BOE meeting will be
held on 9/10. They will honor the 2008 teacher of the
year, Diane Hibbard. She is special education
teacher from PES.
IV. Carol Hubert, Town of Southbury, PTO Advisory Rep. There is a full slate of candidates running for the Region 15 Board of Education. There is also a full slate of candidates running for Board of Selectmen. The League of Women Voters is holding a community forum with BOS candidates on 9/22. Vote is on Wed.,11/6. The CRO (Community Resource Officer) job description has been approved and there is a letter of intent from the police union. The hope is to interview candidates and fill the position soon. Carol asked Dr. Sippy about student enrollment. Enrollment is about 1470. PHS about 25 higher than expected. Official enrollment numbers will be as of 10/1. LMES space may be tight due to home construction in the area. Computer Lab was converted into a classroom. Computer Labs is now on rolling tables.
VI. Old Business - Updated PTO Advisory representative information for each school.
VII. New Business -DYK. Schools will work with Karen Kirk to format and complete. Dr. Sippy will approve and Sue Isaacs will distribute. Each school signed up for one DYK. Each month every school will give a brief report on happenings in their school community for the month. This is a way to keep informed and share ideas. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3rd.
