MEMORIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO WITNESS RAPTORS AT ASSEMBLY Master Falconer Will Bring Meat-Eating Birds of Prey to SchoolMarch 8, 2004, Middlebury/Southbury—On Tuesday, March 9th, Jonathan Wood of The Raptor Project will give a presentation to the students at Memorial Middle School about the vital role of raptors in the environment. Wood, a master falconer and wildlife rehabilitator, will bring approximately 12-20 birds of prey, including eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. The assembly will be held in the school’s gymnasium from 9:00-9:50am and 10:00-10:50am. “Our feathered entourage consists of raptors of various species, from tiny two-ounce owls to eagles with wing-spans of over seven feet,” said Wood. “Although these predators are well behaved, tamed, and trained, they are approachable, but not touchable.” The Raptor Project, a program that provides top quality wildlife instruction, focuses on raising awareness of the vital role of raptors in the environment, protecting raptors and their habitat through sound wildlife management, caring for injured birds of prey and re-introducing them into the wild, and captive breeding to re-establish populations insuring survival of endangered species. Wood’s presentation will center in on the importance of wildlife education, conservation, rehabilitation, and propagation. The Memorial Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization is sponsoring the raptor presentation.
