To support our environmental efforts at Rochambeau Middle School and our growing interest in revitalizing our school courtyard spaces as instructional areas, we are working toward establishing a school garden. With Mr. Kunz's assistance (RMS Technology Teacher) and a committed group of student participants in the Builders Club, we have constructed a few raised bed planters and refurbished benches to place in our courtyards.
To further support our efforts, we have entered the Rochambeau School Garden in a grant funding program through the "Seeds of Change". We are one of a few schools from Connecticut who have entered this contest along with hundreds from throughout the country. Many of the entrants from across the country already have established gardens that they are interested in expanding. We are looking to get started and would love the chance to benefit by this grant funding opportunity.
We encourage the entire Region 15 community to rally around RMS and support our efforts by voting for the Rochambeau Middle School Garden each day beginning Thursday, April 9th - Monday, April 27th. The school (and community garden) receiving the most votes will be eligible to receive the following:
2 schools will receive a $20,000 grant
5 schools will receive a $10,000 grant
10 schools will receive a $1,000 grant
The mere possibility of receiving this support is exciting! If selected, this would further our efforts to create additional planting beds, begin a school composting program, and bring our courtyard spaces back to life while teaching our students about sustainable gardening and the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables. In the long term, we would like to install a multi-season greenhouse to enhance the learning opportunities throughout the school year.
