ROCHAMBEAU MIDDLE SCHOOL SPANISH CLASS LEARNS ABOUT CLOTHING

March 8, 2004, Middlebury/Southbury—It’s Fashion Month in Judith Cruz’s Spanish class at Rochambeau Middle School and students are packing their maletas full of zapatos and camisas. What would a suitcase be without shoes and shirts?

As part of a Spanish-language lesson on clothing, Mrs. Cruz’s 7th and 8th graders are learning to write and speak about different types of footwear and clothing. The students were given the choice to prepare a paper suitcase with labeled pictures of the types of clothing one would take on a trip, or to team up with a classmate and have a fashion show. In the latter choice, one student walks the runway while the other student describes in Spanish what he or she is wearing.

“We’ve been practicing our fashion show for over two weeks,” said Anthony Ferreri, an 8th grader at Rochambeau Middle School. “Shayan (Riahi), Eric (Winger), and I chose to do a Spanish fashion show because we thought it would be more fun working with friends than just doing a project individually. By doing this lesson, we’ve learned a lot of Spanish words for clothing items as well as colors and numbers.”

At the end of their presentation, the students assessed their own work in a number of categories, including correct descriptions, oral presentation, and on-time completion of the project. Mrs. Cruz will then give her assessment of the student’s work for a grade.

“We videotape each student’s work so he or she can see and hear first-hand the skill progression throughout the year,” said Mrs. Cruz. “Because the students are having fun learning Spanish, they are very engaged and committed to the activity. This shows in their test scores too.”
