Ruckus Pomperaug
Artists of Sculpture I and Drawing and Painting I (DPI) created an installation depicting aspects of school life. The artists focused on major areas of interest: prom, classroom, arts, cafeteria, hallway and sports. The students learned to use the Elements and Principles of Art and Design to create this satirical characterization of their world. The arts used written and oral surveys of fellow students to better understand the characteristic qualities of each area. Working as teams and individually, the artists proceeded to compile, assess, and refine the information gathered to assist their brainstorming, sketching and image gathering. The artists molded small-scale clay models of the sculptural figures; DPI artists completed working drawings to plan their backdrops. The form building of the large figures was accomplished with various materials and fabric. The backdrops were mostly acrylic paint on foam core with some collage elements. "Ruckus Pomperaug" is based on Red Grooms' monumental homage to New York City: "Ruckus Manhattan" (1975). |
